Vinland Saga' Gets Second Anime Season

The official website of the Vinland Saga anime series announced a second season on Wednesday. The new season commemorates the second anniversary of the television anime's broadcast. The website also revealed an announcement promo and teaser visual (pictured).

Shuuhei Yabuta (Vinland Saga, Inuyashiki) is returning to direct the new season, with Takahiko Abiru (Hunter x Hunter (2011) animation director, Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season animation director) also returning as the character designer.

Vinland Saga adapts Makoto Yukimura's action adventure viking-themed manga, which he originally launched in Weekly Shounen Magazine in April 2005 before switching it to Monthly Afternoon in December that year. Kodansha published the 24th volume on October 23 last year, with the 25th volume scheduled for release on July 21. Vinland Saga has a cumulative 5.5 million copies of its compiled volumes in circulation.

The television anime's first three episodes debuted on NHK General in Summer 2019 and ended with 24 episodes in Fall that year, adapting the first eight volumes. Amazon's Prime Video platform streamed the first episode ahead of the television broadcast and holds exclusive streaming rights for the show worldwide.

Shuuhei Yabuta helmed the anime series at Wit Studio, featuring character designs by Takahiko Abiru. Hiroshi Seko (Mob Psycho 100) handled the series composition and also penned the script with Kenta Ihara (Youjo Senki). Yutaka Yamada (Great Pretender) composed the scores.

Kodansha Manga licensed the manga in English in October 2012 and began publishing it in 2-in-1 omnibus format the following October. The 11th volume, covering volumes 21 and 22, shipped in December 2019. The manga has also been published in multiple foreign languages, including Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and French.

Vinland Saga won the Grand Prize in the manga division at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2009 and the 36th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga in 2012.
