Mangaka Momoko Sakura Dies


Sakura Production announced on Monday that Momoko Sakura, mangaka of the Chibi Maruko-chan franchise, died on August 15 from breast cancer. She was 53 years old. The funeral was held among family and close friends. The main character Momoko Sakura's seiyuu for the anime series, Tarako, also expressed her sadness regarding the news.

Born Miki Miura, Shizuoka in 1965, Sakura is known for being the mangaka of the Chibi Maruko-chan manga series serialized in Ribon magazine between August 1986 and April 2009. Nippon Animation produced the anime series, with the second season airing since 1995. She also wrote essays in which the first three selling millions of copies, and worked as a lyricist for Chibi Maruko-chan theme songs and for other artists.
