Manga 'Gegege no Kitaro' Gets New TV Anime



Toei Animation has opened a new page for a new anime adaptation of late author Shigeru Mizuki's GeGeGe no Kitaro manga on Friday. The new anime will be the sixth TV anime of the franchise, and will air on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. starting April 1 via Fuji TV and more. Dragon Ball Super currently occupies the time slot, however, Toei has not announced whether the anime will conclude or move to a new timeslot.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first anime adaptation, the new anime will be the first of the franchise to broadcast since Mizuki's death in 2015.

The supernatural manga began under the title Hakaba Kitaro, which was published from 1959 to 1964 with 15 compiled volumes. This later became a template for GeGeGe no Kitaro, which began its serialization in Kodansha's Weekly Shounen Magazine in 1965 and ran for 17 volumes until 1986. The series revolves around the story of a young yokai Kitarou striving for peace between the human and the yokai world.

The manga has been published in English by Drawn & Quarterly since May 2016.
