Third Season of 'Toaru Majutsu no Index' Announced for 2018

At the Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2017, it was announced that Kazuma Kamachi and Kiyotaka Haimura's Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index) light novel series will receive a third anime season in 2018. The new anime series will debut as a part of the 2018-nen To Aru Project (A Certain Project 2018).

The action fantasy light novel series was published under the Dengeki Bunko imprint between 2004 and 2010 for a total of 24 volumes. A sequel novel series titled Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magic Index: New Testament) began its publication in 2011 and currently has 18 volumes in print, with the 19th volume scheduled to be released on October 7. The series has inspired two TV anime seasons in Fall 2008 and Fall 2010, a movie in February 2013, as well as multiple manga adaptations.

A spin-off manga drawn by Motoi Fuyukawa titled Toaru Majutsu no Index Gaiden: Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (A Certain Scientific Railgun) has been serialized in Dengeki Daioh magazine since 2007 and currently has 12 volumes in print, with the latest released in November 2016. The series has also been adapted into two TV anime seasons in Fall 2009 and Spring 2013.

Yen Press licensed the original light novel series in English, and published the 12th volume on August 22. Funimation licensed both anime series for North American distribution. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the spin-off manga in 2011, and published the 12th compiled volume on July 25.
