The illustrator of Shoji Gatoh's Full Metal Panic! light novel series, Douji Shiki, revealed on Wednesday that the first season of its anime adaptation will receive a "director's cut" edition, which will span for three films. The announcement does not specify whether or not the films will contain new scenes.
Full Metal Panic! was published in 12 volumes by Fujimi Shobo between 1998 and 2011. The first season, produced by Gonzo, aired in Winter 2002 for 24 episodes, followed by a 12-episode side story adapting the short story collection in Summer 2003, and the 13-episode second season by Kyoto Animation in Summer 2005. A new anime adaptation titled Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory will be produced by Xebec and is scheduled to air in Spring 2018.
