It has been announced that a new anime series related to the manga Osomatsu-kun will be produced by Studio Pierrot. This is to celebrate the 80th birthday of mangaka Fujio Akatsuka, who is known as the king of gag manga. The series will feature the Matsuno sextuplets and show how they have grown up over the years.
Created by Akatsuka, the manga began serialization in Shounen Sunday in 1962 before moving on to other magazines after 1969. Studio Zero produced an anime adaptation in 1966, which was later remade by Studio Pierrot into an 86-episode series in 1988. The manga won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1964. Akatsuka ended the series in 1990 and died in 2008 from pneumonia.
